The keynote speaker and general session panelists at the world’s largest ethanol conference discussed the industry’s role in decarbonizing the transportation sector, recent policy developments and the importance of CI modeling to ethanol’s future.
U.S. fuel ethanol production was down 4 percent the week ending Aug. 4, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Aug. 9. Stocks of fuel ethanol were up slightly, while ethanol exports were down 51 percent.
Novozymes released second quarter financial results on Aug. 9, reporting a 26 percent increase in bioenergy sales for the three-month period. Overall company sales for the second quarter were up 2 percent.
Whitefox Technologies has announced that Glacial Lakes Energy LLC has agreed to install the Whitefox ICE membrane dehydration system at its ethanol plant located in Mina, South Dakota. Installation is expected to be complete by Q2 2024.

The U.S. exported 111.91 million gallons of ethanol and 949,904 metric tons of distillers grains in June, according to data released by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service on Aug. 8. Year-to-date exports of both products are down when compared to the same period of 2022.
Bryan McGregor, president and CEO of Alto Ingredients Inc., discussed the company’s financial and operational performance during a second quarter earnings call held Aug. 7. He said Alto is pleased by the market’s continued improvements during the period.

Swedish Biofuels AB announced on Aug. 7 that the ASTM International Committee has accepted the use of C2 to C5 alcohols as feedstock for the alcohol-to-jet pathway as well as a new specification for fully formulated aviation fuel with aromatics.

Benefitting from the experience of its many longtime personnel, Adkins Energy has transformed itself over the past 20 years into a one-of-a-kind biorefinery worth celebrating. Adkins Energy was formed in 2002 to provide value to local corn producers. Although its origin may not sound unique to the ethanol industry, the plant’s 20-plus year run proves otherwise. Ethanol Producer Magazine caught up with the team in late July to talk about about the evolution of Adkins and how the plant has transformed in size, scope and direction. Much has changed at the Lena, Illinois, biorefinery, but as you’ll hear from one of the company’s original employees, its ability to thrive over two decades is not only about what has changed, but what hasn’t.
Iowa, Nebraska sue EPA over failure to act on Midwest E15 petitions

The attorneys general of Iowa and Nebraska on Aug. 7 sued the U.S. EPA over the agency’s failure to respond petitions filed by eight Midwestern governors more than a year ago seeking a solution to year-round E15 sales within their states.
The North Dakota Public Service Commission on Aug. 4 denied a siting permit for Summit Carbon Solutions’ Midwest Carbon Express CO2 Pipeline Project. Summit plans to revisit its proposal and reapply for the permit.
Aemetis Inc. released Q2 financial results on Aug. 3, reporting progress with the development of its dairy RNG project and its proposed renewable diesel and SAF biorefinery. The company also highlighted its existing ethanol and biodiesel operations.
Gevo Inc. has announced that its Net-Zero 1 ethanol-to-jet project has been invited by the U.S. DOE to the due diligence and term sheet negotiation phase for a $950 million loan guarantee under the Title 17 Clean Energy Financing Program.

EIA: Ethanol production down 3%, stocks down 2%

U.S. fuel ethanol production fell by nearly 3 percent the week ending July 28, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on Aug. 2. Stocks of fuel ethanol were down 2 percent, while exports were up 64 percent.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing and ethanol production by mills in the south-central region of the country were both up during the first half of July.
U.S. Grains Council leaders, Chairman Josh Miller and President and CEO Ryan LeGrand, traveled to Seoul, South Korea, in July for the 2023 Role of EcoFriendly Fuels in Realizing 2050 Carbon Neutrality symposium.
The Lufthansa Group and the HCS Group have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to partner on the production and supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Starting in 2026, HCS could supply Lufthansa with SAF produced via ATJ technology.
