FEW notes from Minneapolis

The weather was perfect at the FEW in Minneapolis. As always, there was much food for thought. A few observations and notes from the conference:
A new TV spot with Austin Dillon, national sweepstakes, race entitlements, paint schemes and Turner media commitment are part of effort to raise the profile of American Ethanol among NASCAR fans.
The International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo industry tour, held June 7 in Minneapolis, offered attendees a diverse look at some of the many aspects of ethanol production, including oil extraction, rail safety and advanced feedstock development.
Enerkem successfully produces cellulosic ethanol at demo scale

Enerkem Inc. announced today the initial production of cellulosic ethanol from waste materials at its demonstration facility in Westbury, Québec.
Leaders of multiple commercial-scale cellulosic and advanced biofuel companies provided International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo attendees with project updates and explained corn ethanol's role in the next generation of production.
Don't mess with the RFS. It was heard over and over at the International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo, including from Tom Buis and Jim Collins, who spoke the morning of June 6. Buis gave opening remarks and Collins delivered the keynote.
Poet now producing its trademarked corn oil at 14 plants

Fourteen plants in the Poet network have now installed Poet's corn oil technology, bringing total annual production capacity to approximately 235 million pounds per year, enough to provide feedstock for approximately 31 million gallons of biodiesel.

Four executives of ethanol plants gathered on stage during the general session June 5 at FEW to have a conversation about running successful companies, titled “Holding Strong: How U.S. Ethanol Producers are Achieving Profitability without VEETC.
The Ethanol 101 industry seminar held in Minneapolis June 4 featured 17 speakers and four moderators who gave attendees a whirlwind lesson on the ethanol industry from a variety of perspectives, from history and policy to ethanol economics.
Larry Johnson of LLJ Consulting and Business Development received the High Octane award, and University of Minnesota Professor Gerald Shurson, who was traveling in Japan during FEW, was selected as the winner of the Award of Excellence.

Argus launches new ethanol price assessment

Energy and commodity price reporting agency Argus is launching a new ethanol price assessment. The new price is expressed as a differential to gasoline in U.S. dollars per ton and is published in the daily Argus Biofuels report.
There was an upbeat atmosphere at the opening event of the 28th Annual International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo Monday evening, June 4, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

California awards more than $35 million for green transportation

The California Energy Commission approved funding of $35 million to projects that will accelerate the development of green fuels and technology, including $10.1 million to Propel Biofuels for E85 fueling stations.
ICM Inc. announced May 31 that it had completed full-scale commercial instillation of its Selective Milling Technology (SMT) at four ethanol plants and signed a contract to install a second advanced technology at a fifth plant.
